Presentation Evening
The 2007 - 2008 Season presentation night has been announced.
Once again it will be at the Granary in Rye on Friday 30th May at 7:30pm.
All are invited to attend 1st Team, Reserves and Under 18's as well as supporters, friends and family of those involved with the club.
It should be a good night providing someone remembers the microphone this time. (And someone also remembers to keep Lofty and Dunc. away from the mic.).
So lets all have a good time and pay our respects to all the lads who have given so much up for the club during a difficult season.

No Wooden Spoon
SCFL Division 1
Arundel 2 Rye United 3
Rye finish in the same league position as they have done in the last three years courtesy of a last ditch win over high-flyers Arundel. The last game is a good note to finish on and shows that the team are a more capable outfit than their league position has indicated. With more league points won than in the previous 2 seasons and with the combined cup runs providing more wins this year Rye have showed some tangible improvement although with the disciplinary record on the field and several long term injuries during the season which led to consistent selection problems and a tighter league table this Season has left Rye with no improvement in league position.
Rye's future in the top flight, as it has in previous seasons, still now hangs in the balance and is dependant on issues outside the County League, although the realistic chances of another Division 1 reprieve look less likely than they have before and Division 2 football at the Salts looks to be most likely next year.
Still, an excellent finish to a very difficult campaign. Well done lads.

Farewell to a Real Rye Hero
It is with deep sadness that I post this news.
Stalwart Rye supporter Brian perhaps better known as 'Weasel' passed away today after battling against severe illness. No doubt he surrendered on his terms as he had never lost a battle in his life.
Brian, well into his 80's has followed the fortunes of the Club for many years was a familiar sight at the Salt's along with his much loved border collie 'Misty'. A veteran of the D-Day advance during World War 2 he survived despite being in the thick of the action that claimed all but a few of those around him Brian, a true survivor, was a much loved character around Rye.
Brian passed away among the company of his loved ones and on behalf of the Club I would like to pass on our sincerest condolences to them.
You will be much missed 'fella.

Arun Dealt a Jack
SCFL Division 1
Rye United 1 Arundel 1
With Sidley losing their last game to Hailsham the previous evening and Oakwood losing their penultimate game Rye's season was still not beyond redemption as they pulled a single point out of third placed Arundel this afternoon. Rye's reply came late in the 2nd half courtesy of a brilliant finish from talented youngster Jack Dixon in fact it was Rye who had the larger share of shots on target in this exciting encounter.
Chris Gould had two fine attempts foiled by fine saves from the Arundel 'keeper one of which was hit hard and to the left of the Arundel No.1 who demonstrated lightning reflexes to push the ball wide of the post. Marc Gall coming on late as sub was also within inches of the supplying the winner arriving a split second away from a diagonal cross into the box from Scott McDonald. Any sort of touch would have made certain of a 2-1 scoreline the ball scurrying unaided just wide.
Arundel who had shown some quick and inventive one touch play throughout the game were a handful on plenty of occasions but were mostly handled well by the back-line of Foster, Barton, Rea who were buoyed-up with an excellent showing from Ryer in exile Jono Richardson. Richardson who has been part of AFC Totton's title winning side this season continuing his excellent run of results whilst wearing the red and black of United, this time at the other end of the table. Of the 10 or so appearances he has made at his 'home' club he has only been involved in three defeats I believe. His contribution today providing some explanation of that telling influence.
A nail-biter of a competition, complemented by some excellent officiating ended with Rye laying siege to the Arundel goal and judging by the visible disappointment of the visitors at the final whistle they didn't come here today to merely fulfil a fixture.
Stirring stuff.

Zero Tolerance
SCFL Division 1
Rye United 1 Hassocks 3
Rye's entire season was played out in microcosm last night, as many of the preferred squad were missing through suspension and various other unavailability issues, the side was bolstered with many reservists and youth players who got their heads down and dug in for a mostly competitive and well-tempered match with little to choose between the sides.
That is until Rye were needlessly reduced to 10 men yet again through what was frankly an insane challenge at a point where United although 2-1 down were very much still in the game. Never mind that Sam Edwards had earlier equalised Hassock's early lead, or that Scott Price was delivering some fine balls forward, Barton and Harper providing good cover at the back or Movaffagh regaining some great form. Never mind the Senior performances from the 2 youngsters George Rolfe at the back and Grant Payne up front some fine flair and good cover from Jack Dixon, the tireless work rate of Scott MacDonald or the uncomplaining bravery of Alan McMinigal with his knee heavily strapped still causing trouble in the Hassocks defence.
No, it all became futility in one mad moment which left Referee David Spain with no option than to hoist the Red card to a player not more than 10 minutes previously was lucky to receive merely a yellow for getting unnecessarily involved in a fray after a bad challenge on Jack Dixon. Nothing less than suicide.
I'm going to end on the positives however and emphasise that the most grown up play came from two of the youngest players on the park and I couldn't decide between the two who earned man of the match without flipping a coin. So the nod goes to Grant Payne AND George Rolph lads like these are the shape of the future but surely we can only keep them here without sideshows such as last nights.
It has to stop!

Still Fighting
SCFL Division 1
Redhill 2 Rye United 2
Any thoughts that Rye were about to roll over and cave in toward the end of the season were dispelled today as they led for much of the game with goals from McArthur and McDonald. Redhill however countered well toward the end of the game and United had to content themselves with a single point.
The full league tables are now updated on the league stats page, despite the official County League site being currently unavailable presently, for the full story of Division 1 and 2 so far.

Crowborough are Champions!
In one of the few matches that were played around the County today, Crowborough Athletic earned a point in an exciting 2-2 draw against Three Bridges thus confirming them as unassailable in the top spot and making them Division 1 Champions this season.
Fortunately for Rye the bottom placings are yet to be decided although United will now have to stage a remarkable comeback in order to avoid the drop in the course of their remaining games.
Congratulations to Crowborough Athletic and as ever...
